Yerba Mate – The South American Elixir
I had heard a lot about Yerba Mate (that’s pronounced “mah tay”). In fact it is listed as one of the main ingredients in a health beverage Itake regularly, so obviously I have consumed it, but I didn’t know muchabout it until recently when I decided to do a little research. I learned that Yerba Mate is not a new discovery. In fact, native South Americans have used it at least since the early 1500’s.
Yerba Mate is a primarily beverage that is similar to tea. Besides being a popular drink in and throughout South America, Yerba Mate is also considered an herbal medicine that is used as a diuretic and as a stimulant to reduce fatigue, suppress appetite and aid digestion. Here in America, you may have noticed that Yerba Mate is being marketed as an energy-boosting diet tea. It is also an ingredient that you will find in most of the diet pills or tonics that you see on the market today.
